First comic (Brainstorming)

My MA project will include comic adaptations of two stories as well as adding descriptions of illustrated Arabian creatures and mythical places. Through this blog I will share my methodology of organizing , drawing and making this project.

First Comic:

The Well is a short story known in a small village in Palestine, which is about a woman who saved her baby from being kidnapped by a female Ghoul. The events of the story take place in three main scenes . The first one happens near a well, followed by the monster’s cave and  the final scene occurs at the woman’s home.

After listening to my grandma telling the story , I categorized my plan into four sections: 

  •  Dividing the story into three scenes.
  • Translating each scene.
  • Drawing sketches of the characters.
  • Drawing thumbnails as a story bored.





i. Three Scenes


This comic will be presented with a variety of colors. The colors reflect the mood and the situation of the story.


The concept of changing the colors is quite interesting , but can be challenging when it comes to traditional art. 




Scene 1



 

Scene 1 : Use of warm colors to indicate a calm and peaceful morning.









Scene 2





Scene 2: Cool colors like “blue” indicates a cold and heartless monster. 












Scene 3




  Scene 3: Red colors reflect danger and fear.

Isle of WakWak

(Fig.1) (Book of Wonders) 20 May 2019 WakWak Tree Isle of WakWak or WakWak tree is one of the Arabian myths that was mentioned in Wonders of Creation book by Zakarīyā Ibn Muḥammad al-Qazwīn.  The WakWak tree produces fruits which have the shape of a woman's head. These heads make the sound "Wak" when the sun rises,hence the name of the tree.According to onomatopoeia in Arabic, the sound "Wak" is the sound of a rooster. Some stories said that these fruits can talk and they tell prophesies as well. (Figure.1) shows an illustration from the Book of Wonders were the tree is producing a fully grown women instead of just their heads.  There are so many fascinated stories about mythical trees in different mythologies . Such as Kalpa tree from Indian mythology , Nariphon from Thailand myths and Jinmenju tree from Japanese mythology. Illustrating for a vedio game.

My sister Abeer had developed a website and a video game related to the Palestinian culture and folk story. She asked me if I could illustrate backgrounds for the game and design the characters in the game and for the website. Characters: (Fig.1) Shows the main character's design "Mahmoud" in the game. While (Fig.2) shows an illustration of Mahmoud on the website where there are information and background knowledge about him. Figure.1: Character design Figure.2: Mahmoud Figure.3: Mahmoud's father design Background : (Figure 4: Background outside) (Fig.4) shows the outside background of the game. The game is set up in Bethlehem so I tried to resemble the city in the background by adding the masjid and the church. (Figure 5: Background Inside) (Fig.5) Shows the background inside the house where the character "Mahmoud" is talking with his father. Here is a short video of the game.
