Character Development & Referencing

Jinn (Genies) are popular creatures in the Arabian mythologies. There were mentioned in many books such as the Quran , Arabian Nights and Book of Wonders. There are many illustrations of them and adaptations as well.

The illustrations that inspired me to design my own Jinni are from Book of Wonders.
The aspects that I followed to design this character are the following:
  • The animal head and the human body.
  • The clothes " I added other items and made it more modern"
  • I've used the color palettes on the photo reference , but changed the shades and lights.

Information Zarqa Al Yamama is an Arabian woman who had a sharp sight and great intuitions. She lived with her tribe in the Arabian peninsula during the pre- Islamic era, other resources said that the story took place in 250 B.C. Isle of WakWak

(Fig.1) (Book of Wonders) 20 May 2019 WakWak Tree Isle of WakWak or WakWak tree is one of the Arabian myths that was mentioned in Wonders of Creation book by Zakarīyā Ibn Muḥammad al-Qazwīn.  The WakWak tree produces fruits which have the shape of a woman's head. These heads make the sound "Wak" when the sun rises,hence the name of the tree.According to onomatopoeia in Arabic, the sound "Wak" is the sound of a rooster. Some stories said that these fruits can talk and they tell prophesies as well. (Figure.1) shows an illustration from the Book of Wonders were the tree is producing a fully grown women instead of just their heads.  There are so many fascinated stories about mythical trees in different mythologies . Such as Kalpa tree from Indian mythology , Nariphon from Thailand myths and Jinmenju tree from Japanese mythology. Illustrating for a vedio game.

My sister Abeer had developed a website and a video game related to the Palestinian culture and folk story. She asked me if I could illustrate backgrounds for the game and design the characters in the game and for the website. Characters: (Fig.1) Shows the main character's design "Mahmoud" in the game. While (Fig.2) shows an illustration of Mahmoud on the website where there are information and background knowledge about him. Figure.1: Character design Figure.2: Mahmoud Figure.3: Mahmoud's father design Background : (Figure 4: Background outside) (Fig.4) shows the outside background of the game. The game is set up in Bethlehem so I tried to resemble the city in the background by adding the masjid and the church. (Figure 5: Background Inside) (Fig.5) Shows the background inside the house where the character "Mahmoud" is talking with his father. Here is a short video of the game.
