Final Process
In this post I will write a summery on how I did my research and art experimenting for my MA project.
Project description:
Myths from the Olive Lands is a book which contains two stories
about Arabian myths in general and Palestinian fairy tales in particular. The
first story The Well is an adaptation of a fairy tale in Palestine known
on the countryside of Jerusalem, while the second story Lands of Wonder
is my own created graphic story that takes place in a kingdom full of myths and
creatures which were derived from the Arabian folk stories. The Well is drawn with analogue art tools by using
Copic Markers, while Lands of Wonder is illustrated by using digital
tools such as Clip Studio Paint for drawing and coloring, Photoshop for editing
and InDesign for formatting the final outline of the book. Additional to the
book, I published online the prologue of Lands of Wonders which will be
presented digitally in more details with slow pace of development.
Part I
First process was focused on the
adaptation of a Palestinian fairy tale The Well.
- Brainstorming the process of adapting and illustrating a fairy tale.
- Translation process.
- Designing the characters.
- Using visual references.
- Technical solutions.
Part II
Lands of Wonder is an original story created by me
which contains mythical creatures and places mentioned in the Arabian mythology
and Islamic mythology.
Arabian mythology reflects stories,
creatures and historical events that were created by men.
Islamic mythology contains myths
which were derived from only one Islamic source which is the Quran.
- Zarqa Al Yamama (Arabian mythology) is a well-known myth in the Arabian culture especially in the Arabian Peninsula during the pre-Islamic era. I chose this myth because it's unknown to the international audience.
- WakWak Land (Arabian Mythology) is a land which was documented in Wonders of Creations in the 14th century and described by Arabian sailors and traders who traveled to China and came back with stories of dangerous and weird creatures. Reading in details about this Island inspired me to create an original story about WakWak Land.
- Iram of the Pillars (Islamic Mythology) is a well-known mythical city which is believed to be buried under the sands in Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) . Illustrating Iram and reading many stories about it encouraged me to create one of my own. My blog included:

General information and inspiration illustrations about Iram.
ᐉ Art of Iram of the Pillars.

Process of illustrating Iram
- Bahamut (Arabian mythology) is an interesting myth which has a surreal body structure. This creature has different versions in different cultures and religions. I chose this myth because it’s unknown to both Arabian audiences and International ones.
- Qareen. (Islamic Mythology) is a type of jinn that reflects the bad side of humans and it whispers (Hamazat) to them with seductive inner voice so they would commit sins. There are many illustrations and visual presentations of this Jinn , but there is no made up stories or fairy tales about it.
- Jinn are the most known mythical creatures in the Arabian mythology and Islamic mythology , also they are well known to the international audience. I wanted to add the Jinn in my story as minor characters because there is rich information about them and interesting illustrations which can be used as reference.
Part III
Extra Work
Aside from my book, I've posted information about:
- Emerging trends. " How social media could be inspiring for artists? "
- Copic markers. " What are the most artistic tools that I feel comfortable with and what are the challenges ?"
- Creating illustrations for a video game and a website." Working as an illustrator in a new field"
